El viernes 20 de abril de 2018, la Dra. Ana
Faria fue al Instituto Español para hablar sobre la acidificación de los
océanos. Esto es algo que no todos conocen o no les importa, pero es algo
realmente importante.
Muchos de ustedes pueden preguntarse cuál es
la importancia de la acidificación. Pero para responder esa pregunta, tenemos
que saber qué es. La acidificación es causado por la emisión de CO2 en la
combustión de carbono. Hoy las fábricas están produciendo muchas emisiones y el
30% de esas emisiones van a los océanos. Esto provoca variaciones en el Ph, en
el CO2 y en la saturación de los océanos. Pero esto no es todo, porque esto
también afecta a los peces cuando tienen que tomar decisiones, los corales se vuelven
blancos y más.
Los estudios muestran que los efectos en los
peces son malos. Por ejemplo, cuando tienen que elegir de qué manera quieren
escapar de los depredadores, oler el peligro, reproducir crías, ya que estas
ahora son más pequeñas y tienen reservas más pequeñas, lo que les acorta el
tiempo de vida.
Las larvas también son muy importantes, porque
podemos usarlas para saber cómo la acidificación afecta a la nueva generación
de peces de una especie.
Portugal tiene un parque marino llamado
Arrábida. Es un lugar con una gran variedad de especies, porque tiene buenas
condiciones, está protegido, tiene arrecifes rocosos y un buen clima. ISPA
lleva a cabo investigaciones en esta área y estudia los peces que viven allí. Están estudiando peces, en aspectos como la reproducción, la natación, el olfato, la audición ... y
se dan cuenta de que el resultado no es bueno en absoluto.
En conclusión, debemos comenzar a cambiar para
ayudar a los océanos ahora. Necesitamos reducir el CO2, así que si empezamos a
usar energía renovable, podemos hacer que las fábricas reduzcan la producción,
porque hay menos demanda. Además, si los peces tienen problemas y desaparecen,
afectará a todos los peces que los comen, a sus vidas, a todos nosotros y a
todas las personas que viven trabajando en este sector.
¡Nunca es tarde para cambiar!

The
acidification of the oceans
On Friday, April 20, 2018, Dr. Ana Faria went
to the Spanish Institute to talk about the acidification of the oceans. This is
something that not everyone knows or cares about, but it is something really
important.
Many of you may ask what is the importance of
acidification. But for answer that question, we have to know what it is. It is
caused by the emission of CO2 in the combustion of carbon. Today factories are
producing many emissions and 30% of those emissions go to the oceans. This
causes variations on the Ph, on the CO2 and on the saturation at the oceans.
But this is not all, because this also affects fishes when they have to make
decisions, the corals turn white and more.
Studies show that the effects on fish are bad.
For example when they have to choose which way they want to escape from
predators, to smell danger, to reproduce offspring,since these are now smaller
and have smaller reserves, which shortens their lifespan too.
The larvae are also very important, because we
can use them to know how acidification affects the new generation of fish of a
specie.
Portugal have a marine park called Arrábida.
It is a place with a great variety of species, because it has good conditions,
it is protected, it has rocky reefs and a good climate. ISPA conducts research
in this area and studies fishes that live there. They use many varieties of fishing arts to
catch them and they are also studying fish with many tests like reproduction,
swimming, smell, hearing ... and they realize that the result is not good at
all.
In conclusion, we must begin to change to help
the oceans now. We need to reduce CO2, so if we start using renewable energy,
we can make factories reduce production, because there is a less demand. Also,
if the fish have problems and disappear, it will affect all the fish that eat
them, there life, all of us and all the people who live working in this sector.
It Is
never too late to change!
